Heya Oldnickers,
Great bit of detective work! I hate to say it, but I have to agree with TPG on this one. IE6 is now about 8 years old, although it still has some market share. Basically the world has well and truely moved on - and there is generally only two reasons you would still be using it:
1) your system administrator is too slack or too scared to upgrade
or
2) you didn't actually know there was an update.
As a professional web developer, neither case really carries much weight with me - I am afraid that you should really look at upgrading! IE7 has been stable for quite a few years now and is doing as well as can be expected from a Micro$oft browser. IE8 is trouble - with different standards (yet again) there are many websites that are still trying to work out how to run properly on IE8.
On a lighter note - this is actually a debate that many web developers are getting involved in... check out:

I can thoroughly recommend two FREE browsers that work really well, and did I mention - are Free?
* Google Chrome -->
http://www.google.com/chrome (for Windows only)
* Mozilla Firefox -->

Cheers,
