Why does my mouse freeze

I am running Vista Home Premium.  Frequently when I put the compter into sleep mode when I want to start up again the mouse has frozen and the only thing I can do is to switch off altogether.   I know I shouldnt be doing this.  When I restart I do it in SAFE mode then log-off again and restart as normal.   This is so frustrating.  It doesn't matter whether I have actually closed a program or just minimised it and then put to sleep and the time it's been in sleep mode doesn't seem to matter, can be anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour or longer.     Not sure if it matters but I operate on satellite.   Is there an answer for this?  Thanks

Is it only the mouse that has frozen? For example, does other forms of input work, such as the keyboard? I think it's <alt> F4 that can bring up a shut down dialogue box, and you can tab till you highlight the 'shut down button (mind you, this is on older systems, I'm not sure about Vista). This would allow you to shut down in a kinder way - probably do the <ctrl> <alt> <delete> three finger salute to achieve the same. If this doesn't work,  I am wondering if rather than the mouse frozen, the whole system has gone down and 'hung'.

No the keyboard doesn't freeze, I can use the left and right arrow keys but that doesn't  take me to the log-off/shutdown icons.   I didn't know about Shift F4, I'll give that a go next time it happens.   I would just like to know if there's anything I can to to avoid having this happen.  Thank you

Got a quick question for you - is it a USB or a PS/2 mouse ?  You can tell by following the chord on the mouse and pulling out the plug into the computer.  If it is a round shape, then it is a PS/2 mouse - if it is a square/rectangle shape it is USB.

It will probably be to do with the power saving settings in Vistas interacting with the power management on your hardware (motherboard & BIOS).  Now, if you don't know what the BIOS is - don't sweat on it!  There is another fix that might be a whole lot easier.

I suspect that you have a PS/2 Mouse, as I have encountered this problem before with these systems.  If it is a PS/2 mouse, then perhaps you can try a USB mouse as an alternative.  They are relatively inexpensive and really easy to change.
